NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN

Neck and Shoulder pain are one of the most common conditions we treat in our practice daily. This is a broad term used to describe:

  • Tension in the neck and/or shoulder region

  • Acute torticollis

  • Reduced range of motion and/or stiffness

  • Feeling weakness and/or strain in the neck and shoulder region

The most common reason why this issue presents to our practice in this day and age is because of a change in structure of the spinal column.

Let's take a step back and dissect what a normal neck is meant to look like on X-ray. From the front view, the neck is meant to be straight and evenly balanced between both shoulders. From the side view we are meant to see a curve in the neck called a cervical lordosis. The head is meant to sit nice and square over the shoulders, with nice and even spacing between the bones in the neck called ‘disc spaces’.

Far too often, in this day of modern technology and sedentary lifestyles, we see patients present to us with a loss of the curve in the neck and decreased disc spaces (disc degeneration). This inturn leads to tight muscles/ligaments, joint strains, disc issues and more.  At times, this presents in patients as symptoms such as tension, pain, stiffness, limited range, weakness or strain, just to name a few. Each individual can elicit a unique symptom. The symptom is not what we treat, rather we identify what the underlying cause is to eradicate the symptom and allow you to function at your best. It is also important to remember that at times a problem can be present without the presence of symptoms.

It is universally agreed that nothing in the body acts on its own, rather it is controlled by the body's master system, the nervous system, which self regulates and self heals itself. Therefore, if there is a problem or issue in the neck in this case, it is likely to affect another part of the body.

At Realigned Chiropractic Healthcare, we conduct a series of in depth tests and examinations to identify the true cause of your neck and shoulder pain. We then formulate a plan of action so that you have a clear understanding of what needs to be done without any confusion or surprises.
